His friends have started a GoFundMe page to bring Failla's body home to Chatham. According to several published reports, Failla and a friend had been skiing in the "back country" of East Vail. The friend had been rescued after making a 911 call for help, but Failla wasn't found until the next day.

A former ski/snowboard instructor, Failla was a quarterback/safety on the 2011 Cougar football team. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina.
