GIVING TUESDAY—A Great Way to Give back to the Community

Tuesday, November 27th is Giving Tuesday, a day for giving to nonprofits.

Today is Giving Tuesday.  You may have heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  But what is Giving Tuesday?

#GivingTuesday™ is a campaign to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations. It was initiated by Henry Timms, the executive director of the 92nd street Y, a New York community and cultural center.

“We hope that area residents looking to do some good in the community will think about giving to a local charity on Giving Tuesday, “ says Micki Chaput, executive director of senior services of the Chathams which runs the senior center, a transportation service for those that don’t drive and support groups for men and women going through life transitions.  The organization welcomes 7,000 visits to the senior center annually and provides 1,200 rides to those that don’t drive so they can get to the grocery store, pharmacy and nutrition site among other places.

The organization, which was started by Chatham’s Interfaith Council of Churches, was spun off into its own 501 c 3 organization 22 years ago.  “We depend on the generosity of individuals, family foundations and local businesses and civic groups to meet our budget,” said Pam Mansfield, director of development at Senior Services.
