CHATHAM, NJ - The obvious question after the opening game of the 2017 Chatham boys lacrosse season was: "What is the Cougar record for points in a single game?"

A quick survey did not produce any answer, but it's safe to say that Mac Bredahl had one of the best opening games in Chatham boys lacrosse history with his five goals and five assists in the 14-1 win over Sparta on Wednesday.

Mac Bredahl is the Hawk Allstate Chatham Athlete of the Week.

There is something about a matchup with Sparta that brings out the best in the junior attackman. Last May, he collected three goals and five assists when Chatham edged Sparta, 12-10, in the state sectional semifinals. Sparta had been 20-0 entering that contest.

Last year, Bredahl teamed up with Austin Pierce and Matt Coleman in an offense that helped Chatham win the Group 2 state championship. Bredahl ended 2016 with 49 goals and 56 assists. Now, despite the graduation of Pierce and Coleman, Bredahl has returned with the same approach.

"Nothing is really different (in what he does),"  he said. "I personally had a really good game against them last year in Sparta. It gave me some confidence coming into (the opener). We all played well last year."

Bredahl scored the first two goals of the opener and piled up four goals and five assists in the first half when Chatham moved to a 10-0 lead.

"We came out firing," Bredahl said. "We came out with energy and we never let down."
