Food: Capital Grille

The new Capital Grille at Garden State Plaza (the only other New Jersey location is in Cherry Hill) is a quality franchise restaurant that you should consider placing on your list for special occasions, and a date night splurge.

Unlike some of the other restaurants in the Orlando-based Darden Restaurants group (Red Lobster, Olive Garden) the Capital Grille is not for the faint of wallet.

The ambiance is steakhouse/dining club. When you enter, you'll see a series of wine lockers, with the name of each owner prominently displayed.  The interior is lots of mahogany, fancy horse paintings, with a few too many stuffed deer heads displayed on the wall.

The entrees can run you $40+. Appetizers are pricey too. You'll definitely want to order from the extensive wine list, if you haven't stocked up your personal locker.  The menu is traditional-not experimental, but they've definitely nailed down the basics.

Start with a fresh chopped salad, or a plate of fresh mozzarella and tomatoes. The steak is tender, flavorful and the portions are ample. The Seared Citrus salmon stands out as a great combination of sweet, perfectly prepared fish.

The coconut cream pie is the recommended dessert.

Service is nice, and the meal is paced correctly and leisurely. You can bring children, although at these prices it might be wiser to leave them with the sitter.
