BERNARDSVILLE, NJ – To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the birth of Pakistan, Alhamra Art Center is hosting an art exhibit featuring the works of contemporary Pakistani artists, selected handicrafts and antiques reflecting the sociopolitical and cultural evolution of the country.

The show brings visitors a glimpse of all things Pakistani. Contemporary works of art by Zulfiqar Zulfi, Ali Azmet, Amir Taj, Komal Nasir, Bilal Ashraf Butt, Madiha Saail Khan, Sadaf Farasat, Hassan Arif and many others will be showcased, as well as sourced handicrafts from all over Pakistan, thanks to a collaboration with Pakistan Handicrafts, the small industries corporation. There will be embroidered shawls of Murree, caps of Quetta, woodwork of Karachi, carved camel bone accessories of Multan, woolen pieces from Peshawar and brass and copper metalwork from Lahore on display.

A limited number of specially selected antiques will also be exhibited, including a pre-partition copper Paan-daan and brass plates from Mohenhjodaro and Taxila.

When British colonial rule on the Indo-Pak subcontinent ended in 1947, Pakistan and India became two separate countries. Pakistan, with its Muslim majority, and India with a Hindu majority. Seventy years later, Pakistan has retained its sovereignty and evolved its own identity. Each anniversary is a chance to look back at the changes that have taken place and to look to the future. This extraordinary exhibit does just that by featuring the works of contemporary artists who produce beautiful works of art, some of which raise sensitive questions or break taboos, and handicrafts that reflect the rich cultural tradition of craftsman who create clothing, pottery, jewelry, rugs and more. From the nearly forgotten Takhti to the now decorative Rahl, visitors will be immersed in everything quintessentially Pakistani, including the new, the old, the modest and the bold.

The exhibit will run through Aug. 31, at the Alhamra Art Center, 21 Claremont Road, Bernardsville. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
