Madison Area YMCA Gymnasts Place 4th Nationally

Forty-seven Madison Area YMCA Rosettes gymnasts qualified and competed at the 2011 YMCA National Gymnastics Championship meet in June. The Rosettes team placed 4thnationally, moving up from 9thplace last year.

Two of the Rosettes gymnasts, 18-year-old Lia Merkel and 15-year-old Maeve Devlin, placed in the top ten as individuals. They both qualified for finals after two days of competition, naming them both All-American where they were recognized with a special plaque and a jacket. Lia qualified in the Floor, Vault and Beam and Maeve qualified on the Floor. They both competed in Level 9.

Approximately 1,650 girl gymnasts from around the country competed in Level 2 to Level 10 (highest level) depending on ability and age.

The Rosettes gymnasts who competed in Level 8 came in 4thplace as a team among 56 teams, and three of the Rosettes made it to finals: 18-year-old Becky Foot, 18-year-old Haley Smith and 15-year-old Kristen Matthews.

The Level 7, 6, 5 and 4 Rosettes gymnasts competed in single sessions during the competition with outstanding performances. Many of them placed in the top five.

The 2011 YMCA Nationals Gymnastics Championships were held from Thursday, June 23rdthrough Saturday, June 25th in Toledo, Ohio.
