Mercedes Stolen from Driveway, Speeds Away from Police

CHATHAM, NJ  - A Mercedes Benz was stolen from a driveway in the township and the suspect eluded police in pursuit.

On Thursday, Aug. 1, at 4 a.m., a 2007 Mercedes Benz was stolen from a driveway on Driftway. The theft was discovered when officer Wayne Shivers of the Chatham Borough Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle on Main Street for a motor vehicle violation.

When the officer activated his emergency lights, the driver of the Mercedes accelerated to a high rate of speed and eluded the officer.  A computer check indicated that the vehicle belonged to a resident of Driftway. Officer David Schaffer of the Chatham Township Police Department contacted the resident, who confirmed the vehicle had been stolen.
