CHATHAM, NJ - In 1981, John Loder's parents pulled into the family driveway with a new Corvette.

"I was disappointed, I really wanted a DeLorean," Loder said. "When I was 12, I remember driving by the dealership near 287 and seeing the DeLorean. I wanted one ever since."

It took Loder 30 years, but he finally bought one of his own. Loder was one of about 25 DeLorean owners to show up in the Chatham High parking lot for an event organized by the DeLorean Mid-Atlantic Club.

"A lot of people buy them after they see it in the movie (Back to the Future), but I remember driving past it on the way to the shore and asking my grandfather to pull over so I could take a picture. He never did."

John DeLorean manufactured the iconic DeLorean DMC-12 in 1981. The engine in the DeLoreans is in the back and the doors rise up when opened, not out. It has a steel shell over a fiberglass body. The sports car was built in Northern Ireland.

The DeLorean, however, was a financial bust since it cost about $25,000 to buy in 1981. There were about 9,000 made in 1981 and 1982 and appoximately 6,000 still active because of collectors.

The DeLorean became a desireable collectable after it was featured in the 1985 movie "Back to the Future" starring Michael J. Fox. Using a "Flux Capacitor" Fox drove the DeLorean back in time and then into the future.

To the Editor,

I told my daughter I needed to write about gun violence. Know what she told me? “Mom, be sure you’re not too polarizing. People won’t listen.” She’s right. At age eleven she’s figured out that we adults need to be reminded how to speak to one another in order to fix a problem. But I have hope and belief that we can fix that discourse in our ...
