Pay By Phone Coming; Daily Parking Rates Going Up

It will cost more to park here daily in 2014 Credits: TAP Chatham

CHATHAM, NJ - Coming in January, those running late for the train can just climb aboard and not worry about the daily parking machine.

Chatham's new "Park Mobile" system is on track to be ready in early 2014, allowing commuters to pay for their daily parking ticket online through their phone app.

"In the 2014 budget process, we always look at our parking rates," Council member Jim Lonergan said. "Last year, we spent a good amount of money to install new machines. We believe come January 1, Park Mobile will allow daily commuters to pay for their spot online."

In addition to the new service, daily parking will go up 50 cents from $5.00 to $5.50.

"We will be looking to increase the daily rate, which hasn't been increased since Jan. 1, 2008, from $5 per day to $5.50 per day," Lonergan said. "If you pay the machine by credit card, it will be very clean. If you pay $6, it won't spit out quarters for you. You will be paying $6. We looked at towns in the area and it's a very competitive rate. We debated $6 and we debated $7 and we decided on $5.50."
