To the Editor:
I would like to know what we are trying to accomplish by developing the post office plaza. Is it low-income housing? (And if so, are we legally required to do so?) Is it enhanced public space? (None of the suggestions I have seen would make downtown Chatham a more gracious and inviting space.) Is it ratables, i.e. commercial space? (Is there a demand for such space?)
What I have seen so far appears to be a windfall for developers with no advantage to the Borough and a decided financial and quality of life disadvantage to those who live in close proximity to the post office plaza. (In the interests of disclosure, I do not live in close proximity.)
I call upon the Mayor and our Council in their deliberations to put the rational interest of existing Chatham residents first.
