Quarterback Controversy at Chatham? Landolfi and Sands in Battle for Start

Sophomore Alex Sands, left, and senior Sean Landolfi are vying for the quarterback job for Chatham Credits: TAP Chatham

CHATHAM, NJ - The Jets may train nearby, but Chatham football coach Jason Izsa says he isn't emulating any NFL-style controversy in his first year as the head coach.

Izsa knows that his team will be running the Delaware Wing-T this season when Chatham opens at home against Montville, 4 p.m. Thursday at Cougar Field. He just doesn't know who the quarterback will be when the game starts.

At least not yet.

"It's going to be a game-time decision," Izsa said.

Senior Sean Landolfi or sophomore Alex Sands will be calling the signals for Chatham in 2013. In fact, both of them are likely to see time as it is right now.

"One might play the first series, the other might play the second series," Izsa said. "It's been neck-and-neck. One day, one of them will look great and the next they'll take a step back."

The 5-11, 150-pound Sands is a little taller and may have the stronger throwing arm. Landolfi (5-9, 170), a backup at the position last season, has more experience.

"I told them they have a week to battle it out," Izsa said. "I would hope that by now one of them had really stepped up and taken control. The pressure is on them to show that they're ready to lead the team."

Izsa says it's a game-time decision and he could change his mind during the game itself. But the coach admitted he will tell his two quarterbacks who will start the night before.

"On Wednesday night I'll let them know how it's going to go," Izsa said.

With spring holding off threats of snow, recent memories of the Nor’Easter that paralyzed the region are still engraved in my mind. In the height of the last big storm a 65 foot tall, 2½ foot wide white pine gave way to the heavy snow and landed on the house pulling our power line down, 1700 other Chathamites had lost power and trees were down ...
