To the Editor,
Be careful of unintended consequences. Lafayette Avenue already has a safe route to school. There is a sidewalk on the west side of the avenue. The children who walk it have been indoctrinated to walk that single sidewalk. If a second sidewalk is installed, the result could be a less safe route to school. Children would cross over: "Hey, Emma, come walk with us,"... "Mike, wait up, let's go to town for pizza."
Further, installing an east sidewalk will result in the loss of many mature trees; have a detrimental effect on the character and charm of the neighborhood; and result in the loss of wildlife habitat.
Finally, all of the rain that is now absorbed in the ground will be streaming over the impervious sidewalk into the already strained storm drainage system.
