CHATHAM, NJ - According to the CDC, older adults are among those most at risk for the coronavirus and health officials are urging people older than 65 to stay home during the outbreak. The irony is that as people take steps to prevent the spread of the disease, the risks of social isolation can have devastating health consequences on older adults.
Although the Senior Center of the Chathams is closed for daily programming, staff is working to make sure that seniors in Chatham are not slipping through the cracks. The Center is focused on making sure people are connected to necessary resources and services and receive the emotional support and connection they need.
Specifically, here is what the Senior Center is doing:
- Communicating with the County, Township and Borough to identify older adults who may be off its radar
- In conjunction with the municipalities of Chatham Township and Chatham Borough, we are reaching out to Chatham residents over 65 to identify needs, and link them to staff and volunteers
- Coordinating with local volunteers who can shop and deliver groceries to older adults
- Working with volunteers to provide telephone assurance and emotional support
For more information, if you know of an older adult who may need assistance, or if you are willing to volunteer, please call the Senior Center of the Chathams at (973) 635- 4565.
