Region Choir is an auditioned honor choir comprised of 9th-12th graders from schools located within Bergen, Hudson, Essex, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, and Warren counties of New Jersey. Over 70 schools sent their students to Paramus on Saturday, January 4th for a day of auditions. This year, over 500 students auditioned for these spots, and those with the top scores were accepted into either the Mixed Choir or the Treble Choir. Each choir is comprised of 100-200 students.
For the audition the students had to prepare for three sections: scales (diatonic and chromatic), a preselected solo, and tonal memory. Each section is judged by a panel of three adjudicators.
Over the course of the next three weeks, the students will meet for rehearsals after school, which will culminate with a performance on Saturday, February 1 at 4:00PM at Morris Knolls High School.
This year the choirs will be under the direction of Dr. David Fryling (Mixed Choir) and Mrs. Patricia Danner (Treble Choir).
Region Band auditions are open to all high school students in northern New Jersey, approximately 80 high schools. Hundreds of students audition on their band instrument, and auditions consist of major scales, a solo piece, and sight reading. The auditions are blind and scored by three judges. Students receive a score which determines if they are accepted into one of the two groups, either Wind Ensemble or Symphonic Band. Students then have three rehearsals at a determined high school followed by a gala concert.
Also, students who make Region Band are also eligible to audition for All State Band. These auditions are open to students accepted from all 3 Regions, 1, 2 and 3 (north, central and south Jersey) and go through the same audition process, rehearsals and concert which occurs during the NJMEA Conference (New Jersey Music Educators Association) in New Brunswick in February.
