TAPintoTravels - With the state back open for business, we no longer have to worry about being turned away from state-run parks and recreational sites. If your weekend plans were ruined due to the shutdown, make up for lost time by visiting one of the area’s most anticipated upcoming weekend events.

97th Annual Carnival

The town of Califon in Hunterdon County is hosting their annual carnival—an event nearing its 100 year anniversary. The event will continue through Friday and Saturday opening daily at 6 pm. Highlights of the fair include amusement rides, food trucks, carnival games with prizes, and a super 50/50 raffle. Fireworks will be held at sundown on July 7.

Firefly Festival

Have you noticed the fireflies coming out at night? Duke Farms in Hillsborough is planning to celebrate this beloved bug on Friday, July 7 from 8 pm to 11 pm. During the event, guests can meander through over a mile and a half of trails for primetime spying of lightning bugs. Along the walk, there will be interactive stations to discuss fireflies and learn how to attract them to your backyards. The event is free to all.  Please register on their website though.

Hopatcong Day

The town’s annual celebration will be held on July 7 and July 8 at Modick Park. In case of rain, the festival will be postponed to the following weekend on July 15. Most of the family activities are scheduled for Saturday with athletic competitions reserved for the evening before. Craft and food vendors will start at 10 am on Saturday while the petting zoo, pony rides, and carnival games open at noon. Free hot dogs, drinks, and ice cream will be served throughout the day.

Theatre in the Park

Spending time with your family during the summer doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg. Consider going to Hoboken’s free shows held in Elysian Park. This Saturday’s show is called “So You Want to Be a Pirate!” and is a musical adventure about life on the seven seas. The show takes place between 2 pm and 4 pm with guests invited to bring chairs, blankets, and picnic lunches.
