Thousands Expected to Celebrate New Jersey Miracles at 12th Annual Miracle Walk

Walk-a-thon to Benefit The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

at Saint Barnabas Medical Center planned for Sunday, October 7, 2012

When six-year-old Christopher Niro sees physicians and staff from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, there is great excitement. At birth, Christopher had no heartbeat, he was not breathing, and his limp, blue body did not respond to the airway being suctioned. By all tests and measures, he appeared to be lifeless.

Following delivery, Christopher was immediately turned over to a team of neonatologists at Saint Barnabas who began lifesaving techniques. Miraculously, he began breathing after five minutes and tests showed he did not sustain brain damage.

“He is a true miracle baby,” says Christopher’s mother, Kim Niro. “Based on all evaluations he is doing very well. We are so thankful.”

Join the Niro Family and hundreds of other parents and former NICU patients for the 12th Annual Miracle Walk on Sunday, October 7, 2012, at 9:00 am, in Verona Park, Verona, NJ.  The walk will celebrate life and raise money for the 56-bed Saint Barnabas Medical Center NICU.

Since its inception, more than $3.5 million has been raised to support this highly specialized unit which provides the most advanced care for premature and ill newborns. Funds raised by the annual event are used to acquire the most technologically advanced items and equipment available – ensuring NICU babies at Saint Barnabas receive outstanding care and experience as little discomfort as possible.

As a Level III Regional Perinatal Center, the highest designation attainable, the NICU treats more than 1,200 infants annually for prematurity, low birth weight, acute illness, and congenital disorders. The NICU has one of the best infant survival rates among neonatal intensive care units in the nation. In fact, babies that are born at Saint Barnabas Medical Center 17 weeks early have twice the survival rate of those born at other hospital in the Vermont Oxford Network, a group comprised of more than 400 hospitals nationally and internationally.

Dear Editor:
