In April, twenty-three members of Troop 8 in Chatham Borough travelled to the sunny Florida Keys for a week of high adventure. The sixteen scouts and seven Assistant Scoutmaster adult leaders went to Seabase on Big Munson Island for an Out Island Adventure.  Big Munson is part of the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base, which is one of four high adventure bases operated by the Boy Scouts of America.  Big Munson is a remote 100+ acre island that is home to many different ecosystems.

The three crews from Troop 8 flew to Florida and took a van to the Sea Base Camp.  The following day they loaded all of their gear, including water, food, clothing, and gear into war canoes and paddled 5.5 miles out to the island.  Once they arrived at the shore of the Island, they had to wade ashore carrying all the food, water and equipment needed for the trip.  No cell phones, electronics or watches were allowed on the island so that the scouts and adults could live on island time.  Everyone slept in hammocks for the entire week.

Throughout the week, the crews participated in many activities consisting of hiking around and exploring the island, fishing, snorkeling, and kayaking through the mangroves. In the middle of the week, there was a day of deep-sea fishing out in the ocean proper where the scouts caught various types of sharks, barracuda, squirrelfish, mahi-mahi, and yellowtail fish.  The scouts also spent a day snorkeling at a reef where there were many beautiful fish and underwater creatures.  At the end of the trip, the participants paddled back the 5.5 miles to Sea Base where they were treated to a wonderful luau dinner.  On departure day, the Troop 8 scouts and assistant scoutmasters spent some time touring Key West before driving to Miami for the flight home.  This weeklong, exciting and rugged camping experience was a true high-adventure program, one that combined physical challenges with excitement and adventure.

Spending More Per Pupil Doesn’t Guarantee Additional or Enhanced Success

April 20, 2018

Dear Editor:

At the April 16th Board of Education meeting, Board member Sal Arnuk stated: “I am ashamed to see the district at the bottom of the list in per-pupil spending.”  On the contrary, Board member Arnuk should be exceedingly proud of how our Board of Education is able to consistently be ranked as the top school district in our state at the cost it currently spends per ...
