Walsh Ties School Record in Long Jump, Qualifies for Group 3 Meet

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ -  John Walsh tied a school record in the long jump and led a contingent of four Chatham track athletes to qualify for the upcoming Group 3 championship meet when they competed in the boys state sectionals held Friday and Saturday.

Walsh finished fourth in three events to advance to the Group 3 meet, along with Chatham teammates Andrew Vena in the 400, Ed Dennerlein in the shot put and Will Mitchell in the 3200.

Chatham finished in eighth place at the sectional meet with 32 points.

Walsh leaped 21'-0 in the long jump to equal the school mark set by Scott McCullough in 2007. The senior also placed fourth in the high jump by clearing 5-10 and fourth in the hurdles in 15.29.

Vena crossed sixth in the 400-meter run in 50.87 and Dennerlein threw the shot put 45'-9" to gain sixth place. Mitchell set a personal record time of 9:39.28 in the 3200, good for fourth place

Also:  All three of the Cougar relay teams placed in the top six and received medals:
4 X 100:  6th place;  Noah Walsh, Jaylen Haye, Phil Heller, Nick Ferrone;  45.52  (best time of season)
4 X 800:  3rd place;  Dominic Vernazza, Parth Shah, Kevin Gesell, Will Mitchell;  8:08.45  (best  time of season)
4 X 400:  2nd place;  Andrew Vena, Kevin Gesell, Jaylen Haye, Stephen Bondurich;  3:27.95 (best time of the season).

Additionally, many personal records were set by Chatham athletes:

Kevin Gesell:  7th in 800;  1:57.67; Dominic Vernazza:  8th place in 800; 1:58. 63; Parth Shah: 11th in 800 in 2:01.90; Will Kraemer: 11 feet in Pole Vault; Grant Hauck placed 11th in both the 1600 and 3200: 4:36.51 and 9:55.91; Liam Hynes:  1600;  18th in 4:42.58; Patrick Mortensen:  24th in 3200; 10:22.24; Steve Bondurich;  7th in 400 in 51.85; Ed Dennerlein: 13th in Discus; 119'10"; Filip Bahunek:  5'8" in High Jump.
