Although it’s hard to believe, we are in the final month of summer. Before long, Labor Day will be here and our normal school and work schedules will be in full swing. Whether you’re staying in town or heading down the Jersey Shore this weekend, you’ll find lots of family-friendly activities to enjoy.

Summer Movies in the Park

Outdoor movies showings are a fun and inexpensive way to spend quality time with your family. At Turkey Brook Farm in Flanders and at Van Saun Park in Paramus, there will be scheduled movie showings beginning at 8:30 pm on Friday. Bring chairs and a blanket along with a picnic basket full of goodies to snack on while you watch the films. The Lego Batman movie is scheduled to play at Van Saun Park while Turkey Brook Farm has yet to announce the planned film. Admission is free for the events.

Coleco Expo

If you’re under the age of 30, Coleco may sound completely foreign to you. However, back in the 1980s, the game maker was responsible for many bestselling titles like the Donkey Kong series. The New Jersey Expo Center in Edison will be celebrating Coleco and other retro game brands on both Saturday and Sunday. Toys and collectibles will be on sale as well as special guest speakers and prize drawings. Doors open at 10 am and advance tickets are available for purchase.

Steampunk Land

If you’re looking for a unique experience this coming weekend, stop by Hasbrouck Heights’ annual summer bash. Festivities kick off at 6:30 pm on both Friday and Saturday with activities inspired by literary creations that highlight the blending of magic and science within an 18th century setting. Guests are invited to come in costume and pre-registration is required. A suggested donation will be requested in lieu of a set admission price. Crafts, music and food will all be included with your ticket. A midnight movie will also be shown during the late-night affair.

2nd Annual Fringe Festival

Downtown Hammonton is holding a three-day fest to celebrate the arts. Within walking distance, there will be multiple stage productions taking place with ticket holders having unlimited access. The Eagle Theatre will act as the central hub during the event. Food and wine will be available for purchase from participating street vendors.
