You know of my lifetime support of efforts to combat mental illness. One of those major battles is the fight against the rising suicide rate, especially among young people in the U.S. Today, the abuse of opioids has been especially deadly in the Middle School age members of the community. It is an issue common to every community in which we live. Chatham is no exception. As mentioned above, we are having our annual “Out of the Darkness” walk on Saturday, September 22nd. We seek to call attention to this pressing problem that few acknowledge and that fewer even want to speak about. We must raise awareness to the warning signs of a potentially suicidal person, before they succeed and we end up connecting the dots after the fact.

Suffering from depression since I was in my teens, this issue is of great importance to me and I am walking to help raise funds for both awareness and research. The funds raised for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)- North Jersey Chapter remains IN New Jersey. It remains where most needed, and Chatham is one of those areas of need. I ask that you please donate whatever you can. A penny, a dollar, 10 dollars, or more will make a huge difference. While individually a small donation may seem insignificant, collectively, it amounts to meaningful funding for this most important issue. I ask for your generous support. There are many of you who have donated to my re-election campaign to the Chatham Borough Council; so, I realize you can’t “go to the well” too often. Give what you can, if you can. Below is the link to my donor page.

For those who do not trust the security of the internet (like me), you can donate via check. The check would be made payable to the “American Foundation for Suicide Prevention” or AFSP.  In the memo section of the check write: “Chatham 9/22 walk- Len Resto”.  Send the check to:  AFSP c/o Liz Roithmayer, P.O. Box 3068, Hoboken, NJ  07030.

If you have any questions or want to know how else you can help, either give me a call or send me an e-mail.

Thank you for your generous support last year and I hope I can count on you again.

Regards,

Len Resto
