With the creation of the Office of the President in the 1787 Constitution, the young American republic debated what kind of official residence would house its elected Head of State. President George Washington resolved the question with the layout of a brand new capital along the banks of the Potomac River and with a fine new Georgian-style mansion – the largest home in America until the Civil War. Dubbed the ‘Presidential Palace’ by some and the ‘Executive Mansion’ by others, what became the White House evolved over many First Families as both a bustling public office and private home. From the British burning of the White House in 1814 through its many period redecorations and renovations, the White House had become the ‘People’s House’ by the time of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s restoration and televised tour in 1962.
