CHATHAM, NJ - Evelyn Tomaro of Chatham recently won first place at the Hanover Wind Symphony competition for her solo performance on the oboe. She is also a member of the Chatham High Band, which is directed by Brian Conti.

Tomaro will perform as the guest soloist at the Hanover Wind Symphony concert in October and will receive a scholarship towards a music summer camp of her choice.

"For the HWS scholarship competition I was required to learn a piece written for concert band and oboe, so I chose "Variations on a theme by Glinka" by Rimsky Korsakov," Tomaro said. "I also had to submit a letter of recommendation from my private teacher, a paragraph on my devotion to music, and music camps I plan to apply for.

"After being chosen to audition, I performed the piece for a panel of HWS members and answered a few interview questions such as my interpretation of the piece, what I enjoy about music camp, and my plans for the future."
