CHATHAM, NJ - The Christmas season officially kicked off in Chatham on Thursday night with the first "Light Up Chatham" event held off Main Street on South Passaic Avenue.

The event coincided with the lighting of the white lights on Main Street. One block of South Passaic Avenue was blocked off to traffic so Chatham shoppers could gather for hot drinks and a meeting with Mrs. Claus.

The event was organized by Janice Piccolo, director of Chatham Community Services, and Borough of Chatham Council member Vicki Fife.

"We ate at Sorriso Kitchen and then we came here," said Lisa Bruno, who brought her two children to the event. "My kids were excited to come here."

Charlie Bruno, 6, wrote a letter to Santa Claus asking for a magic wand. She was able to mail the letter in a conveniently placed mailbox supervised by Mrs. Claus.

After shopping at Bloomers, Suzanne Popper, who bought her childhood home from her parents in recently moving back to Chatham, brought Molly, 6, and Grayson, 2 1/2, to hear the Chatham Community Jazz Band.
