CHATHAM, NJ - The Chatham Borough Planning Board took the first step toward forming a vision for redevelopment of the 5 1/2 acres known as "Post Office Plaza" by a 7-0 vote on Wednesday night.
The planning board voted to approve the study it commissioned on the feasibility for redevelopment at Post Office Plaza. The 36-page study was presented to the board and the public by licensed planners Philip A. Abramson and Leigh Anne Hinderlang.
Abramson explains in video below that there is nothing specific in mind that goes with the designation of the area for redevelopment. "We're believers in an open and transparent process," Abramson said.
The preliminary investigation recommended that the area qualifies to be designated as a "non-condemnation Area in Need of Redevelopment." The report also details the legal standing for such a designation.
The recommendation for redevelopment now goes to the Borough of Chatham Council for approval. This is the first step in a long process to come up with a redevelopment plan for Post Office Plaza.
Chatham Borough collects $175,000 in taxes from businesses located in the area of Post Office Plaza and the plan is to redevelop in order to bring in more tax dollars. Chatham Borough also re-examined and adopted a new Master Plan to accommodate "Smart Growth" development in downtown Chatham.
Chatham Borough Council member Vicki Fife says it's time for the "borough to move forward."
