CHATHAM, NJ - Some 225 Chatham High students are taking advantage of the Senior Internship Program, getting hands-on experience working in local schools and businesses this spring.

SIP, under the direction of CHS teacher Sally Simonfay, has grown from 50 students to its current total of more than 200 students. Students work 25 hours a week during the five-week program.

Chatham Wealth Management takes two seniors into the program every year and the CHS students this year are Justin Costello and Graham LeMon.

According to Dan Moskowitz, Certified Financial Planner and president of Chatham Wealth Management, his senior interns sit in on meetings, listen to corporate earnings calls, watch webinars concerning taxes and financial planning, participate in investment committee meetings, participate in marketing meetings, sit in on reviews of accounts, complete online modules designed to educate them about Stocks, Bonds, Options, Alternative Investments, ETF’s, Mutual funds, Taxes, Estate Planning, Retirement Planning and participate in the online stock market game.

“They have shown great interest in learning about managing money," Moskowitz said. "They ask pertinent questions regarding how economics, geo-political events and human behavior affect global capital markets. They actually do their homework and show up to the office with new questions every morning."

Sophie Collins is doing her SIP with TAPinto Chatham, a hyper-local online newspaper, writing features, covering local stories and reporting on sporting events.

"The senior internship program has been really beneficial experience for me because I'm working in a field I'm considering studying in college,"  Collins said. "Right now I'm majoring in marketing, but I had been considering double majoring in communications as well. I've really enjoyed my experience writing, researching, and interviewing people in the community for TAPinto Chatham, so having that real world experience has definitely influenced my decision to pursue studying public relations or journalism next year.

"I never wrote for the school paper in high school and regretted not getting more involved in a field I'm interested in. So I'm really glad I have a second chance to get involved in journalism by interning with TAPinto Chatham."

In Praise of Chatham’s Main Street

November 17, 2017

To the Editor:

Could Chatham Borough’s Main Street commercial district be better? Of course, it could. But upon reflection, I’m amazed at how good it is!

It’s cheerful and incredibly convenient. I’ve never failed to find parking behind the Post Office, which is such a short walk to the main strip. My family uses at least six of the restaurants ...
