CHATHAM, NJ - The School District of the Chathams will be discussing the possibility of opening district athletic fields over the next week, with rules in place for proper social distancing, according to the May 1 update sent out by Chatham Superintendent Michael LaSusa.

LaSusa, in a letter to parents, noted that 40 states had closed school for the rest of the school year and that Chatham is still awaiting word from Gov. Phil Murphy.

LaSusa's complete message to parents can be read below:

Dear Parent,

I hope that you and your family are well at this time.  We continue to await firm guidance and direction from the Department of Education about an array of issues, including possibilities for high school graduation ceremonies, Extended School Year, and more.  In the absence of such guidance, I provide the following brief updates:

Meal Assistance

There are many families in New Jersey and in our community in need of food and meal assistance.  While the school district has been providing assistance to our students who qualify for the federal lunch programs, there are families in need who do not fall into this category.  A number of local organizations have stepped up to help our friends and neighbors.  Please see the attached flyer for meal assistance if you need it.

Eventual Reopening of Schools

Roughly 40 states have closed their schools for the year.  Governor Murphy has yet to make any announcement about this, but whenever schools do re-open, they will likely look different.  I have received many email messages about ideas on how to reopen schools once we are afforded the opportunity.  I am attaching to this message the latest preliminary guidance from the CDC that is meant to support President Trump’s three phases of “Opening Up America Again.”  I am providing this to you so that you can see some of the preparations and considerations that we will have to undertake when we ultimately come back on line.  They are sobering and depict how complicated the process will be, assuming that these guidelines are in effect.

District Fields

The Governor has announced that state parks will reopen this weekend.  We will be discussing the re-opening of district fields in the coming week and will make a decision regarding access to district fields, with appropriate social distancing, soon.
