To the Editor:
My colleague and friend Karen Koronkiewicz is running for Chatham Borough Council, and I enthusiastically endorse her candidacy. I have known Karen for 14 years, first as a Business Development colleague at Wyeth Consumer Healthcare (later acquired by Pfizer), and then as a teammate at the New Jersey Dragonboat Club. Karen has the perfect combination of deal-making experience, good humor, and team leadership skills to contribute to Chatham Borough.
The negotiating skills Karen has honed in her work in business development at Wyeth/Pfizer would make her an invaluable contributor to Chatham Borough Council. Karen’s work in business development revolves around negotiation, forming strategic business partnerships with external companies to help drive growth for her employer. Karen gets deals done because she is a good listener, able to probe what each party needs, and a smart analyst, able to see how the goals of each party might fit together. She knows how to draw on expert knowledge and organize a team to make collective assessments to evaluate opportunities. At a time when Chatham will be negotiating with large developers, Karen’s experience will empower Chatham Borough to get the best deal possible from these big players.
I also know Karen through her leadership and service at the New Jersey Dragonboat Club. As a breast cancer survivor, Karen contributes to a community of survivors by leading a team in dragonboat races across the region, where many breast cancer survivors gather for mutual support and empowerment. To give more women access to these community-building races, Karen helped found a major annual fundraising event, DragonFest 4 Breasts, which offsets the costs to allow survivors to participate in racing festivals around the region and in a major international competition which takes place every four years.
As an assistant coach, Karen helps the dragonboat team focus and improve performance through smart guidance and positive encouragement. She lightens the mood and puts people at ease with her sense of humor and wit. She leads the team with spirit as much as hard work and intelligence.
Karen is savvy, service-minded, and a lot of fun to be around. She would make an ideal member of the Chatham Borough Council, and I hope you will vote for her on November 5.
