I am Karen Koronkiewicz and I am running for Chatham Borough Council. I have lived in Chatham Borough on Lincoln Avenue for over 17 years. I chose Chatham in part for an easy commute, but more importantly because I was attracted to Chatham’s charm, especially its downtown. I have a science and business background; I have worked in clinical research managing clinical trials, and in business, marketing brands and developing innovation. For the past 13 years, I have been negotiating licensing and acquisition deals for Pfizer and most recently Nestle Health Science.
I have also volunteered in the community including at St. Patrick’s Church as a lector and assisting with its Christmas in a Box Ministry helping families in need have an enjoyable Christmas. In addition, I am a member of the Undergrounding Advisory Committee of Chatham Borough, which is exploring the feasibility of putting the utilities underground in order to increase reliability.
Over the past five years, I have been involved in coaching a dragon boat team and running fundraisers that support various programs to support breast cancer survivors. I joined a breast cancer survivor dragon boat team after I had completed treatment for breast cancer. After having attended many dragon boat races throughout New Jersey, I recognized that there was an opportunity to create a local race at Lake Parsippany where we practice. Our inaugural event was held in 2017 and has grown each year.
I love Chatham, but it is at a crossroads – it needs to find ways to keep up with growing expenses without overburdening its residents. I believe that I have the right skill set, at the right time to not only envision Chatham’s future, but to set it on a path to achieving it.
I believe that my career and volunteer activities have prepared me with the right combination of negotiating, analytical, and leadership skills to work out the best possible solutions for Chatham residents. Managing budgets, analyzing data and negotiating are the things that I do every day. I understand the complex decision-making that goes into making choices to not only stay within the budget but to exceed its goals. I have sat across the table with CEOs who threatened to walk away and I have found ways to come to a common ground to get the best deal for my company.
I believe that we can make our tax dollars work harder by negotiating better contracts for services and by finding ways to do things differently and more efficiently than we may have in the past. I will work hard to ensure that Chatham Borough gets the best deal possible out any negotiations with developers, and will be prepared to walk away from a bad deal for our residents.
If elected as Chatham Borough Councilperson, I am committed to listening to all sides of an issue. I will research the issue, draw on expert knowledge if needed, and seek to understand all points of view before I draw any conclusions. I will also treat the Chatham Borough budgetary decisions as though it is my own money, because in a small part, it is. I will use my background in science and business to find economical and sustainable ways for Chatham to continue providing exceptional services while controlling costs and taxes.
These are skills that I will add to council and I am excited to get the opportunity to serve the residents of Chatham.
So please vote for me, Karen Koronkiewicz for Chatham Borough Council on November 5th!
