Alyssa Ulla - Girl Scout Gold Award Recipient
Chatham High School
Project Title: Senior Palette
Alyssa’s Gold Award project promoted creativity and self-expression among senior citizens. She recognized that there seemed to be a lack of stimulation currently present in facilities that house the elderly.
To counteract this lack of stimulation, she hosted art classes every month when residents of the Garden Terrace Nursing Home had the ability to creatively express themselves.
Research has shown that art therapy has a positive impact on those suffering from neurodegenerative diseases. From stimulating one’s memory to boosting a person’s mood, art allows these residents to express themselves not only artistically but also verbally.
