CHATHAM, NJ - Agapito Guzman became the first armed Class III Special Law Enforcement Officer to be hired by the Borough of Chatham when his appointment was approved on Monday night at the regular meeting of the Borough Council.

Guzman is a 25-year veteran of the Paterson Police Department, where he served as a housing officer, patrol officer, major crimes detective, in the missing persons unit, and in the Megan's Law Unit. Guzman speaks both English and Spanish.

Guzman will be based in the Chatham Middle School, but will also spend time protecting Washington and Milton avenue schools.

In a related move, the Borough of Chatham Council adopted an ordinance on second reading that establishes the position of Special Law Enforcement Officer. Guzman will be paid $35 an hour.
