MADISON, NJ - Weichert Realtors is preparing to commemorate 50 years in Chatham, so it was only appropriate to honor Joe Marts, who worked as a Weichert realtor for 41 of those years.

Diane Walsh, manager of the Chatham Weichert office, organized an 80th birthday celebration for Marts at the Short Stories Bookshop & Community Hub on Thursday afternoon. The hardest part, according to Walsh, was to get the modest Marts to agree to come since he was reluctant to be the center of attention.

"It's been wonderful," Marts said of his association with his former boss, Jim Weichert. "The best thing about it was that integrity at Weichert is the top of the line."

Marts served as the Chatham Borough Mayor from 1976 through 1979 and also was a member in the U.S. Marine reserve for six years.

"When I first got married the first thing we did was call Joe Marts when we needed to buy a house because that's what everybody did," Realtor Mary Weichert said. "Joe Marts actually married my uncle Tom as a Justice of the Peace. We're lucky to have him."
