CHATHAM, NJ - Chatham's boys and girls soccer teams continued to tune-up for the 2019 season with respective scrimmages on Monday.
The Chatham boys dropped a 2-0 decision to Ridge at Cougar Field in the morning and the Cougar girls got goals from Olivia Garman and Ashley Kiernan during a 2-2 draw with West Essex at Haas Field in the afternoon.
"We've got a good group," Chatham boys soccer coach Mark Maka said. "We gave up two goals today. It's hard to judge preseason. We're giving a lot of guys minutes and opportunities to prove themselves and we're still figuring out what our strongest group is. We have more depth than we've ever had. When you sub that much it disrupts the flow. We played 20 guys. Just finding the right balance"
Junior Garman connected for the Chatham girls with a 22-yard free-kick that carried over the goalie's head in the first half. Minutes later, Cougar sophomore goalie Cate Hackett came up with two big rapid-fire saves - a foot save on a low shot and a parry of shot headed for the far post.
In the second half, West Essex tied the game at 1-1 before Chatham responded with a quick goal to regain the lead at 2-1. Senior Jen Olnowich crossed the ball from the right wing and sophomore Kayleigh Coughlin got a foot on it before freshman Kiernan put it away.
