MORRIS PLAINS, NJ - The Chatham boys cross-country team honored the memory of 2006 CHS graduate Ben Massam by wearing retro jerseys and placing fifth at the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 3 meet held Saturday at Greystone Park.

Massam, a standout distance runner at Chatham High, recently died after a battle with cancer.

"The boys cross-country team dedicated this week's State Sectional Meet to the memory of Ben Massam," Chatham coach Patrick Barry said.

Senior captain Alec Gironda placed third with a personal-best time of 16:04 on the 5K course, pacing Chatham to fifth place with 111 points and an average time of 16:52. Senior Anthony Scerbo was 17th for the Cougars in 16:47.

The fifth-place finish qualifies Chatham for the Group 3 meet set for next weekend at Holmdel Park.
