LIVINGSTON, NJ - Chatham High juniors Preston Yen and Sonia Julius each earned a 10th place at the NJSIAA State Individual Fencing Championships held last Sunday at Livingston High.
Preston competed in the boys sabre and Julius in the girls foil.
"Qualifying for the individual championship puts you among the top 20 fencers in your weapon," Chatham fencing coach Jerry Duffey said. "Preston and Sonia have done extremely well this season with terrific records and proved that they deserved their position as a top ten fencer in the state.
"The whole team is proud of the tough fighters that they are. It was a good finish to Chatham's 10th varsity fencing season. We hope it will encourage other kids to take a look at fencing and join the fun as we start to get middle school kids ready this Spring for future seasons."
Yen qualified at the District 3 tournament in January by taking the fourth spot in the district individual round. Julius earned fifth at the District event and was promoted when another fencer withdrew due to injury.
