CHATHAM, NJ - The Cougars took the lead in the first period with a big touchdown run by Peter Schelling and Quinn Kelly's extra point. That lead lasted for all of 14 seconds.
Any momentum Chatham had gained from Schelling's 32-yard touchdown run was wiped away by the ensuing kick return for a TD that regained the lead for Morristown as the Colonials went on to post a 38-7 win on Saturday.
Morristown (2-1) took a 25-7 advantage into the halftime break and Chatham coach Dan Czepiga tried to jump-start his team by switching from junior starter Luke McAloon to senior Ryan Coughlin at quarterback.
"Nothing against what Mac (McAloon) did, we were just trying to see if we could get something going with another guy in there," Czepiga said. "There are more issues going on than just the quarterback."
Morristown ate up nearly half of the first quarter with its 14-play opening drive. The Colonials had first-and-goal from the three before the Cougar defense stiffened. It was fourth-and-goal from the three when Colonial QB Jackson Willette managed to break the plane despite a hard hit by Coughlin (see below).
The Cougars responded with a drive of their own, capped by Schelling's scoring run. The senior started to run left, emerged from a crowd of players and bolted in the opposite direction on his burst to the right corner of the end zone (see below).
Quinn Kelly turned this swing pass from Ryan Coughlin into a first down for the Cougars in the second half
COUGAR NOTES: Chatham (0-4) has now lost nine straight games dating back to last season ... RB Peter Schelling scored his fifth touchdown of the season in the loss to Morristown. Two of the five TDs are kick returns. The senior did not get a chance at a third kick return since the Colonials made sure to kick the ball away from Schelling, who did not touch the ball on a single kick ... Senior LB Ryan McArthur blocked two extra points vs. Morristown, giving him four blocks on the season, one of which was a field goal attempt ... Senior Quinn Kelly intercepted a pass for the Cougars with 16 seconds left in the first half ... Chatham plays at Madison (1-2) 7 p.m. Friday. Last year, the Dodgers topped the Cougars, 26-21, despite a 50-yard TD run by Schelling ... Madison dropped a 41-21 game to West Essex on Friday night.
