CHATHAM, NJ - The overcast skies might have been seen as a dark omen if winless Randolph had been able to pull off the upset over the Chatham field hockey team on Monday.
But after the Rams scored first to take the lead, senior forward Hailey Coates responded with three straight goals for a hat trick in powering Chatham's 4-1 win at Haas Field.
"Sometimes we won't match the speed of the game that we will typically play," Chatham coach Kaitlin Leyden said. "There is no excuse for that. We should have gone out with more of a fire and urgency."
Samantha Willis handed Randolph (0-6) a 1-0 edge 18 minutes in before Coates knocked in a feed from Gabby Cutlip to make it a 1-1 game before the break (see below).
Coates knocked in the game-winner about 10 minutes into the second half when she rebounded her own shot and lifted the ball into the net from a hard angle (see below).
Coates collected her third straight goal for Chatham (5-1) to earn her hat trick, redirecting home a drive off the stick of Charlotte Hamilton with 9:25 showing (see below).
