CHATHAM, NJ - The competition for the Chatham starting quarterback job that has been waged all preseason ended Tuesday after practice when head coach Dan Czepiga named junior Luke McAloon as the starter over senior Ryan Coughlin.
"Mac won the job, Coughlin will be our starting safety as well as working in with running back a little bit," Czepiga said. "Obviously, he'll be the guy if something happens to Mac.
"We keep track of all the evaluations during camp. Those evaluations showed that Mac had better performances overall through camp than Coughlin. It was a tight race. Mac beat him out by a slim margin. It was a battle. They both have to be ready to go because you never know what's going to happen."
McAloon was the third-string quarterback last season and made his first start on Nov. 1 because of injuries. In the playoff consolation loss to Mendham, McAloon threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for a TD. He completed 15 of 26 passes and was intercepted twice.
Chatham opens the season 2 p.m. Saturday at Morris Hills.
