MORRIS TOWNSHIP, NJ - Junior forward Ryan Sordillo netted a goal in each period, notching a hat trick in powering Chatham past Morris Knolls, 5-2, in a boys ice hockey game played Tuesday night at Mennen Sports Arena.
Sordillo opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just 23 seconds into the action. Sordillo followed by converting a pass from Brandon Lupi with 32 seconds left in the second period, and deposited an empty-net goal off a feed from Spencer Spagnuolo, with five seconds left in the third.
"I thought we came ready to play, getting on the board first was huge for our momentum and confidence," Chatham coach Brendon Herr said. "I thought we put three good periods of hockey together tonight and was proud of our team for continuing to play well in our defensive zone in the third period with the lead."
Chatham (1-0-2) also received a power-play goal from sophomore Tommy Sennett with 1:40 left in the second. Declan Curry and Quinn Kelly were credited with assists on the goal.
In the second period, freshman defender Ryan Burke scored his first career varsity goal in pushing the Chatham lead to 3-1. Lupi was credited with the assist.
Chatham senior goalie Jennifer Olnowich earned her first varsity win for the boys by stopping 26 shots.
"Jennifer (Olnowich) was excellent tonight, making some big-time saves at important moments of the game," Herr said. "I thought our compete level was great the entire night and we played a really disciplined game."
