CLARK, NJ – It was another busy week for the Arthur L. Johnson High School winter sports teams.

Boys Basketball

Johnson opened the week with a 63-52 home loss to Roselle on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Roselle led 17-10 after one quarter. Matthew O’Connor put in 16 points to go along with seven rebounds for Johnson. Agustine Puentes added 11 points in addition to five assists for the Crusaders.

Johnson bounced back with a convincing 72-47 road win over Roselle Park on Thursday, Jan. 9. O’Connor had 14 points and eight rebounds, Anthony Ferreira contributed 14 points and Joseph Carney added 11.

Johnson improved to 4-4 after defeating Cranford, 51-44, on Saturday, Jan. 11. The Crusaders used a 17-4 third quarter to ignite a comeback. O’Connor finished with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three blocks and four steals. Carney had 11 points in the win.

Johnson returns to action at Dayton on Tuesday, Jan. 14.


Johnson lost to Scotch Plains-Fanwood, 5-2, on Jan. 9.

Ice Hockey      

Johnson had a 9-0 shutout of Newark East Side on Wednesday, Jan. 8. The Crusaders had a 45-16 advantage in shots on goal. The team put in three goals apiece in each period.

Nick Galati had an incredible performance of five goals and three assists. Richard Ledden added two goals and an assist, Ryan Fizer and Adrian Skiba scored, with Skiba also having three assists, and Mike Midrano finished with five assists.

Johnson improved to 7-2 following a 10-2 win over Bayonne on Friday, Jan. 10. Eight players scored for the Crusaders, led by Anthony Morreale’s three goals. He also had two assists, as did Fizer and Anthony Jacobs. Nick Sofiankois had 28 saves between the pipes for Johnson.


Johnson lost to Dayton, 100-70, on Tuesday, Jan. 7, falling to 1-5 on the season.

Girls Basketball

Johnson earned a 58-18 win over Union on Thursday, Jan. 9. The Crusaders had three players finish in double figures. Katie Ledden had 14 points and six rebounds, Lily Gull totaled 13 points and Ashley Samsel finished with 11.

The Crusaders dropped to 2-5 on the season following a 69-49 home loss to Union Catholic. Ledden scored a team-high 12 points and Dominka Kosiek added 11. Madison Johnson led three Union Catholic double-figure scorers with 19.


The Crusaders lost a 45-33 match to New Providence on Monday, Jan. 6. Earning wins for Johnson were Matthew Lordi (106, forfeit), Nichola Pipala (126, pin 4:43), James Lordi (138, 4-0 decision), John DeSantis (170, forfeit), Griffin Jones (182, pin 1:29) and Jordan Downey (195, pin 5:00).

Johnson (0-6) lost to Linden by a 45-33 score on Wednesday, Jan. 8. Sean Simoes had a 9-5 decision victory at 145, David DiFulvio earned a pin in 4:21 at 160 and Dante Montouri earned a win via a 53-second pin at 285.

Johnson will wrestle at Scotch Plains-Fanwood on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 6 p.m.
