CLARK, NJ – The Arthur L. Johnson High School winter teams had another busy week. Below is this week’s roundup for all that took place.
Johnson defeated Dayton on the road, 54-48, on Tuesday, Jan. 14. The Crusaders used a 10-2 second quarter to get some separation. Three Johnson players finished in double figures. Joseph Carney hit four 3-pointers and led the team with 19 points. Aidan Laughery added 10 points and six rebounds, Agustine Puentes finished with 10 points and six assists and Matt O’Connor had eight rebounds and three blocks.
Johnson, now 6-4 on the season, won its fourth straight behind a 62-31 rout of Brearley on Thursday, Jan. 16.
The Crusaders built a 17-2 advantage after one quarter. O’Connor led Johnson with a game-high 14 points and seven rebounds, while Puentes finished with 13 points and five assists.
Johnson edged Kearny, 4-3, on Wednesday, Jan. 15. The Crusaders put in two third-period goals for the win. Johnson held a 48-25 advantage in shots on goal.
Nick Galati finished with two goals and two assists, Adrian Skiba scored and had two assists, Matt Bellucci scored, Mike Midrano, Anthony Morreale, Richard Ledden and Luke Texidor had assists and goalie Nick Sofianakos made 22 saves.
The Crusaders (9-2) won their fifth in a row by defeating Dayton, 8-1, on Saturday, Jan. 18. Johnson held a 32-16 advantage in shots on goal. Galati put in five goals and had an assist, Morreale had a hat trick, Ledden had three assists, Skiba and Kyle Sachewitz had assists and Sofianakos made 15 saves.
Johnson (3-7) lost to Summit by a 50-29 score on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Summit held a 20-2 advantage in the third quarter to pull away. Ashley Samsel led the Crusaders with 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Olivia Lawlor led Summit with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Johnson defeated Scotch Plains-Fanwood, 46-35, on Thursday, Jan. 16. Katie Ledden led the Crusaders with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and a block. Lily Gull finished with 12 points for the Crusaders.
Dayton edged Johnson, 43-39, on Saturday, Jan. 18. Dominka Kosiek had a strong game for the Crusaders with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds to go with five steals, two assists and two blocks. Ledden came down with 11 rebounds and had three blocks.
Johnson (1-8) won its first match by defeating Rutgers Prep, 51-25, on Saturday, Jan. 18. The Crusaders lost to Brearley, 43-36, on Friday, Jan. 17. For Johnson, Matthew Lordi pinned at 106, Nichola Pipala won by forfeit at 132, Henry Nordstrom won by pin at 170, Jordan Downey won by pin at 195, Marc Galati won by forfeit at 220 and Thano Kofos earned a 53-second pin at 285.
Johnson dropped a 65-9 match to Scotch Plains-Fanwood on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Matthew Lordi won a 9-2 decision at 106 and James Lordi pinned in 1:38 at 132.
