CLARK, NJ - More than 200 motorcycles took off from the Deutscher Club in Clark on Sunday for the annual Knights in the Woods Picnic. The event, hosted by the Blue Knights III chapter of New Jersey, is a fundraiser for the Valerie Fund, an organization that provides medical services to children with cancer.
“Children come first, so anything we can do to make a positive influence on children is what we’re all about,” said motorcycle rider Mike Kufta of Manhattan.
The Blue Knights III chapter is part of the Blue Knights International law enforcement club. The club is comprised of active and retired law enforcement officers who enjoy riding motorcycles. The chapter has been hosting charity events for many years, but this is the third year that the picnic has partnered with the Valerie Fund, according to Blue Knights III Chairman Jeff Joy.
“In the last couple years, we were able to give $7,500 each year to the Valerie Fund,” Joy said.
This is the third year that the picnic was at the Deutscher Club, and 380 people attended altogether, according to Joy.
The fully escorted motorcycle ride started in Clark at 11 a.m. and continued for 50 miles through Berkeley Heights, Scotch Plains, Fanwood, Warren and Watchung.
It was followed by a picnic with live music from the band Ruff Edges.
Rider Cathy Weaver of Union Beach said she liked the ride for its “friendship, camaraderie, and the feeling that we’ve accomplished something for the Valerie fund.”
