SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NJ – The Polar Bear Plunge normally conjures up visions of hearty souls running across a snow-covered beach to bravely (crazily?) jump into frigid waters all for a good cause.  Unseasonably warm temperatures made Saturday’s Polar Bear Plunge seem more like, well, a day at the beach. But it was all still for a good cause.

Clark’s own Daniel and Ryan Collins, along with dad Leo of Rahway, took the race into the Atlantic’s 40 degree waters to benefit Special Olympics New Jersey.  The three are members of the Jersey City police department’s “Frozen Copsicles” plunge team.

“Helping others who can't pay you back, for me, is one of the greatest feelings ever,” Dan Collins said. “It's very fulfilling. It's a chance to show unity and at the same time give back to the community.”

An added bonus for the brave family was meeting former NY Giant punter and Super Bowl XLVI champ Steve Weatherford, who was decked out in a rainbow tutu and straw sombrero for his dip in the frigid waters.

Special Olympics New Jersey is a non-profit organization that provides sports training and Olympic-style sports competitions for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Thousands of supporters take part in the Polar Bear Plunge each year, raising more than $1.4 million for the cause annually, according to the Special Olympics NJ website.
