CLARK, NJ - There was a tense hour at Carl H. Kumpf Middle School on Tuesday morning as students and staff were made to evacuate the building after a call to emergency responders about a heavy odor of natural gas in the building according to Clark Fire Chief Frank Cerasa.

Three engines from the CFD arrived on the scene at approximately 10:20 a.m. and immediately cleared approximately 500 people from the building.  Cerasa described what happened next.  "Members of the BOE's maintenance staff, firefighters and Elizabethtown Gas personnel checked the entire building with no readings or cause of the original odor. The exterior of the building, sewers and manholes were also checked," said Cerasa.   "We were able to clear the scene and allow everyone back in the building by 11:20 a.m..
