CLARK, NJ – Giulianna Bonacchi was getting ready to celebrate her eighth birthday when she decided that this year would be different. This year she would give instead of receive, asking that friends and family donate to the Friends of Linden Animal Shelter instead of buying her presents.
Giulianna’s mother Alessandra Bonacchi, a teacher at Carl H. Kumpf Middle School, shared her daughter’s birthday request with her students.
“The students' reactions were priceless. They went from shocked, to impressed, to motivated to help,” said Bonacchi.
Once word got out about Giulianna’s selfless request, other children joined in, giving the shelter lots to celebrate.
“The very next day I had students dropping off donations to contribute to Giulianna’s collection," Alessandra Bonacchi said. "Then the whole school got involved through student council and soon the back of my classroom was filled with supplies for the shelter.”
Giulianna and her family dropped off two car loads of supplies for the Friends of Linden Animal Shelter. The shelter took to Facebook to share the story and thank everyone for the donations: “Thank you, Giulianna, and keep up the good work!”
“Kumpf truly is a special place with great kids who come from wonderful families,” said Bonacchi.
