CLARK, N.J. – Clark’s Deutscher Club is offering takeout three nights a week. Takeout service is open to the public. The club began offering takeout in mid-April, the club’s manager and chef, Ewald Holinger, told TAPinto Clark.

“I cook original German food, authentic German food,” said Holinger, who was born and raised in Austria. “We change the menu every day. The kitchen is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for takeout. And the menu is changing daily.”

Holinger said the club began offering takeout to the public because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the closure of its sit-in restaurant. The restaurant, which is only open to members and their guests, has since reopened at 25% capacity, according to the club’s website.

The coronavirus pandemic also forced the club to cancel several of its events.

“We had to cancel a lot of events,” Holinger said. “[Events] were cancelled in the beginning, and then when the governor allowed 500 people, we could hold the events with only 500 people.”   The club holds about 20 events in a typical year, Holinger said.

The kitchen also offers catering for any occasion, event of gathering.   

The Deutscher Club was first established in Rahway in 1935 and moved to its current Clark location, 787 Featherbed Lane, in 1950. It has since become “the largest German Club in New Jersey” and focuses on “promoting German Heritage, traditions, and Gemütlichkeit [friendliness],” the club’s website says.
