CLARK, NJ –First graders at Valley Road School are learning to read in the dark.  Despite age-old wisdom which warns against reading in the absence of light, these children are thriving in the shadows according to school officials.

Thanks to Mrs. Sakowski’s these students aren’t under a total cover of darkness, instead she has them enjoying Flashlight Fridays, a new reading initiative this year.

Every Friday, the students receive 20 minutes of reading time in the dark with their flashlight.

According to their teacher this unique approach helps students become successful readers through engaging their interest and building confidence.

“I already see a change with the students’ attitudes towards reading, and I feel Flashlight Friday has played a huge role in that. Every Thursday before we dismiss, the students are so excited that the next day is Flashlight Friday,” said Sakowski.
