Dear Editor,
From 1970, when he first founded the American Top 40 franchise, thru 2009 radio music personality, Casey Kasem presided over, Casey’s Hot 40, Hot 20, Casey’s Countdown, American Top 40 and Top 20 and finally American Top 10. Kasem garnered a lifetime of financial security by compiling lists.
We American’s love our lists and relish the moment when our favorite book, song or car make it to the national top ten best sellers lists. There are top ten lists for just about everything: best and worst etc., etc. Just name it and there is probably a top ten best/worst ten list of some kind.

The internet unearthed numerous lists regarding property taxes, tax rates, average tax bills and more including the highest and lowest taxes in not only the state but the throughout the country as well. According to the website www.StayConnectedtoNJ.com, we here in NJ had the highest property taxes in the nation in 2016 (again). 4/6/2017. The average residential bill in the state has risen from $8,161 in 2014 to $8,549 in 2016.

A list showing the 30 municipalities with the lowest property taxes in NJ showed only one Union County town; Winfield Park had checked in at spot #15. An analysis by Zillow showed that the 10 most expensive counties nationally for property taxes are all in New York and New Jersey. Five of those counties are in NJ. Our beloved Union County made the coveted Top 10 List at #7 ahead of historic Morris and scenic Hunterdon at #9 and 10 respectively.

Being a top ten Miss America finalist, the Safest US Cities or the Best Places to Live in America is something to brag about. However, placing #7 on the list of being the most taxed counties in the country is not exactly about to earn kudos. Unless one wants to crow about being up from the 8th place back around 2006.

Most municipalities work long and hard to get their annual budgets in check. And as a former mayor I have to brag that in year 3 of my administration we brought in the lowest tax increase in 12 yrs, 8 of which were under Democratic rule before the GOP came along. For years they spent like drunken sailors on shore leave and I understand that now that the Dems are back in control they are at it once again.  The UC County Democratic Freeholder board is no different. They easily spend other people’s money with wild abandon and one would think that with Runnells Hospital no longer on the books running in the red the tax levy by the county would have eased up a bit. But NO. It appears that congrats are in order here, as Union County progresses slowly, creeping up from the TOP Ten into the TOP Five.

The residents are the ones who can put a stop to this calamity.  The team of Quattrocchi, Martini and Lijoi are the answer to this dilemma. Give us a chance to make a real change by voting Republican on November 7th.

Sincerely,
Patricia Quattrocchi
Clark, NJ

Politics IS Government in Union County

April 21, 2018

After Bruce Patrson of Garwood was stopped from speaking at the Union County freeholder meeting of March 22 regarding the politics behind refusing to give the party line to a sitting freeholder I thought this brazen suppression of free speech could not go unanswered. At the the April 19 meeting I answered with these comments.

After ten years of following government in Union County I conclude ...
