CLARK, NJ -- The Union Catholic boys and girls cross-country teams, led by Abby Granrath and Shane Brosnan, received several personal best performances when both squads placed a very strong second at the NJSIAA South Jersey, Non-Public A Championships on Sunday at Oak Ridge Park ..

It was the first time the NJSIAA ever held sectional cross-country championships for non-public teams.

In the girls race, Granrath, a junior who was third in a season best 19:31, and senior Danielle Coyne, eighth in a career best 20:20, sparked the Vikings, ranked No. 17 in the state to a hard-fought runner-up finish to No. 8 ranked Red Bank Catholic, 42-51. Coyne's 20:20 was a personal best by 24 seconds!

The other three scorers for the Vikings were freshman Leilani Gibson, 10th in 20:34, senior Morgan Williams, 11th in 20:36, and junior Jenna Keith, 19th in 21:19.

The UC boys, coming off its first Union County Championship ever, turned in a very impressive showing when the Vikings, ranked No. 8 in the state, finished second to Christian Brothers Academy, the No. 1 team in the state, 22-44.

Brosnan, a junior, came through with a monster performance,placing third in 15:41, a career best time and the third fastest time in course history.  Right behind Brosnan was UC junior Myles Plummer, fourth in a personal best 15:59. Plummer won the Union County title earlier this month.

Also for UC, senior Matt Granizo placed 10th in 16:39, senior Sam Hernandez was 13th in 17:29, and junior Noah Handlin finished 14th with a big personal best of 17:33, 23 second faster than his previous best.
