Dayton Girls Basketball Off to 3-0 Start with Win Against Johnson

SPRINGFIELD, NJ – For Dayton, the game started out differently than the first two games of the year.  This time at the start of the game, the Bulldogs fell behind 9-4 to the Crusaders. Then Dayton went on a 14-2 run to close out the first quarter with an 18-11 lead.  That lead expanded with each quarter and the Bulldogs pulled away to beat the Crusaders on the Mountain Ave. hard court 66-40.

Coach Dave Rennie noted Dayton “…knocked down eight three-point shots in the game and benefited from a suffocating defense that caused 21 steals.”

The Bulldogs were led by senior Captain Amanda Lau with 24 points that included four three-point shots.  Lau played a complete game with six steals, one block shot, and three rebounds.  She also made six free throws.

Junior Sayre Brandstatter added twelve points included two three-point shots. She collected three rebounds, and made seven steals and six assists.  Junior Caitlynn McTernan contributed seven points and six of the seven came from two three-point shots.  McTernan pulled down four rebounds, made four assists and made three steals.  Sophomore Michelle Bellino also scored seven points made up of three field goals and a free throw.  She pulled down three rebounds and made three steals.

Junior Maggie Phillips scored six points, pulled down three rebounds, made two assists and collected a steal.  Senior Zoe Frei scored six points and made four rebounds.  Senior Melanie Schickler scored two points, made two rebounds, distributed two assists and made one steal.  Senior Julia Cohen added a field goal.

The Crusaders were led by junior Bailey Rosenmeier with 13 points.  Senior Amy Wysocki added seven points, freshman Chelsea Lessock added six points, and junior Cecelia Puentes added five points.  The other eleven points came from senior Kristina Palella (4), senior Shelby Lyons (3), senior Danni Hartzler (3) and senior Kellie Bonaccorso (1).

At the half Dayton led 32-19 and they extended lead to 49-31 through the third quarter. 

The Bulldogs are now 3-0 on the season and face Freehold Borough in the first game of their annual “Joe Pepe Tournament” Thursday December 27 in a 4:00 p.m. home game.

The Crusaders’ next regular season game is a 5:30 p.m. home game on January 6 against division rival Oak Knoll.
