Drug Bust: Over $60K in Illegal Drugs and a Firearm Seized from Scotch Plains Home

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ – Detectives from the Scotch Plains Police Department, the Union County Narcotics Strike Force and the Union County Special Weapons and Tactics Team executed a search warrant at 518 Forepaugh Ave. in Scotch Plains that led to the arrest of two residents and the seizure of more than $60,000 in illegal drugs, local officials said in a release issued on Thursday afternoon.

During the search warrant, which was conducted around 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning, detectives located approximately 14 ounces of heroin, over five ounces of cocaine and more than eight ounces of ecstasy/MDMA. Altogether, law enforcement officials estimated the total street value of the illegal substances to be worth approximately $64,000. Also located during the search was a Glock 10MM handgun with an extended round magazine and hollow point bullets.

Two arrests were made as a result of the month’s long investigation conducted by Investigator Brad Belford of the Scotch Plains Police Department.

Malik A. Canty, 38, was arrested on a number of charges related to possession, manufacturing and distribution of a controlled dangerous substance within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of a firearm while committing a drug offense, and endangering the welfare of a minor as a nine-year-old child was present inside the home. He was transported to headquarters and is currently being held at Union County Jail in Elizabeth, NJ.

Also arrested during the investigation was Rasheedah Canty, 40, who was charged with possession of heroin, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and endangering the welfare of the minor. She was transported to headquarters, processed and released on a summons.
